When to Go Miami Snook Fishing

What’s great about snook is that you can catch them all year long. But certain times do better than others. Moreover, snook has distinct emigrational patterns to remember, and knowing this will help you know where to go to catch snook.

Spring

The weather begins to warm up after a cold winter season, with snook slowly moving out of canals, creeks, and rivers. Snook will move onto the backwater and flats, with the fishing frenzy beginning!

Target snook towards passes and inlets as the water warms up. We recommend sinking a line on bridges and docks, particularly at night, which is where and when snook feed.

Summer

Now summer is when Miami snook fishing officially begins. During this time, you’ll find anglers heading out to passes and inlets in the hopes to catch snook and other species.

The most productive areas would be beaches around inlets or beaches with a structure like docks and rocks. Sight fishing is an effective technique for Miami snook fishing during summer.

Fall

Fall is when the spawning season ends and when snook begins returning to backwater areas, away from the inlets.

Like springtime, you can catch snook from bridges and docks. Opt to chum with live bait, which is known to be effective during the fall since snook is hungry this time of the year.

Winter

Snook aren’t huge fans of the cold weather. In fact, the cold can seriously harm them. That’s why you’ll find snook in backwaters, particularly in creeks and rivers. These areas provide refuge as they are warmer compared to open flats.

Targeting snook isn’t impossible come winter. You can start by checking winding areas with turns or deeper holes, as snook tend to congregate here.

Miami Snook Fishing Gear

We highly recommend using spinning tackle and light lure, as this gives your gear enough stress to handle large fish. Prepare a 7′ medium-heavy fast-action rod, which allows anglers to make longer casts with light lures. While you can use a monofilament line, 20-pound braided lines are better options as snook would sneak around the structure.

Another thing to consider is to use baitcasting tackle, particularly if you are a seasoned angler targeting big snook. Moreover, baitcasting tackle is effective when you have heavier lures, like plugs, because it allows you more power! Baitcasting tackle is also effective around bridges or other structures when using large live bait.

Remember that snook is aggressive and opportunistic feeders, so they will take any bait as long as it’s presented right. Live bait and artificial lures are effective, but the former is more effective.

Why lures?

Lures are more effective in triggering and exciting snook to bite while covering more water compared to live bait. You can use jugs, plugs, soft plastic bait, and more. That said, we find spoons to be more effective along shallow flats.

If you plan on using live bait, any small fish is great, along with shrimp. Try big live shrimp, which entice snook during the winter as they are easier to catch. Other effective baits include croakers, herring, mullet, pinfish, and sardines. Just make sure you match the hook size to the live bait.

Finally, use circle hooks, which would hook into the corner of the fish’s mouth!

Miami Snook Fishing Techniques

How to Cook Snook Fish | livestrong

The fishing technique you’ll use for Miami snook fishing will depend on when and where you’ll try catching them. Because snooks love hiding around structures, you have to use the most appropriate technique that works best for the area and other conditions you will fish in.

Using light tackle is a popular way to catch snook since they feel all the pulls and leaps when you hook snook.

You can also use spinning tackle in bays and backwaters during the spring and fall. They also work well on beaches during summer. Come summer snook is cruising the surf line, and sight fishing from beaches is a fun activity. Light tackle works, but experienced anglers can try their hand at fly fishing with Snook fly, particularly white-colored ones.

When fishing inlets and passes, it’s best to use heavier tackle and live bait.

As the waters start to cool come winter, you can try trolling with artificial lures, covering more ground in residential canals. Shallow diving plugs are excellent to use at this time for trolling in canals or light casting in rivers or creeks.
